News and Notes from The week of 5/24/2010

Morristown NJ,

The lads have a big week ahead with a friendly today against a local club from East Hanover. With match Day 1 quickly approaching there is much fine tuning to be done and roster decisions to be made.

Clayton speaks out on rumor:

We caught up with Manager/ Captain Dan Clayton after his game with Sportsfriends FC. He said that he didn't mind the thought of coming up with a line up with the aid of the board. " Listen we all know hat happened last year, I was making decisions based on my gut and really had no time to evaluate the players. If I had recommendation from the board then I could weigh my options, and with the depth we have I think we can make great decisions on our boys and have them preform at their best."

He also spoke about his expiring loan from Sportfriends FC " My home is with the Morristown 1776 AFC however, if I can help a team while getting game ready myself, I'm going to do it. Sportfriends have really helped me develop my game to a higher level and with their playoff run, im going to help then try to win a title, but if it conflicts with Morristown, then I will stick with Morristown. There are also some tournaments that I might be recalled for, but that's mostly weekends, if I have a nagging injury, I wont put myself at steak to be injured again."

Catizone placed on Reserves:

Louie Catizone, a large defensive mainstay with the club from 2008 and 2009 has been placed on the reserves due to commitment issues, he has not ruled out a return to the club, but a board member who chose to speak off the record said " He will have to come back with a lot of heart and guns a blazing to be considered to play.

Luithi Day to Day with heel injury:
Peter Luthi, The projected Match Day 1 Starter has been held out of training all week for precautionary reasons due to a heel contusion he suffered during a pick up match last sunday "he should be ok just rest and ice will do him fine" said Russel Bauer, the lead medical advisor on the team.

Breaking News: Rumor Says Clayton Out as "Only" Manager?

(Morristown,NJ)- A source close to The Morristown 1776 AFC's board of Directors claims discussions have been held regarding Clayton as the manager of the club.

The source claims the club is considering instituting a "Selection Committee" in favor of a single gaffer, similar to a common pre-World War II Football League method by many Clubs squad selection in England (Most Notably: Newcastle United 1892-1930 , Also: Burnley FC 1882-1894, 1935-1945, , Manchester City various periods, And Numerous other high and lower division clubs).

According to the source this would not strip Clayton of his power but rather make official the current unwritten rules the club has been following for game day squad selection and tactics choice.

In the short history of The 1776, on-field performance has failed to meet expectations and many supporters have placed the blame on lack of stability of the managerial and captain positions.

Clayton is currently the longest tenured manager in club history, holding the position since Ryan Vinton's resignation in March 2009, a tenure which has included a very disappointing grand total of zero victories.

According to the rumor; The Board of Directors is said to be holding a meeting on the subject sometime later today.

Thursday Notes: Herte Returns, Clayton Back From Loan

(Morristown,NJ)- Chris Herte, a late season addition to the Morristown 2009 MCSSA side, former Florida Institute of Technology player and 2006 1st Team All-Mercer County Goalkeeper while playing for West Windsor South High School has agreed in principle to return for the club's 2010 MCSSA Campaign according to a source close to the club, terms of the deal are unavailable.

The versatile 6'4" Herte who appeared one game in goal and then anchored the central defense for The Continentals final 4 game playoff push last year gives Manager Clayton options on his usage.

The arrival of Herte creates competition for the keeper spot with a finally healthy Ryan Vinton, who played well in last Monday's friendly and appears to be near his pre-knee injury fitness, an also versatile Marco Carvallaro is also in the picture to be the #1.

Herte also presents an intriguing central defense pairing with veteran Mugs Naveendra, and sources close to the camp claim this is the most likely scenario.

Clayton Returns From Sportsfriends Loan Deal

Long time club standout, fan favorite and current club player/manager Dan Clayton has returned from a short-term loan deal with rival Sportsfriends FC of Wayne,NJ.

Clayton appeared in 3 matches with Sportsfriends, all wins and registered 1 shot on target. He is expected to command the central midfield for Morristown this Summer.

MT76 Becoming A Home For Former Track Champions

(Morristown,NJ)- At this point it seems clear Chester Berry will make The Morristown 1776 AFC Roster for the upcoming MCSSA Season, becoming the 3rd Former Morris County Outdoor Track Champion to don the maroon and white in as many years.

Following Dylan Bauer (2007 200m & 400m) and Brian DeMarco (2003 1600m), Berry won back to back 200m titles in 2003 & 2004 before moving on to a successful career on the Track at the University of North Carolina. Berry's High School 200m winning time was almost .8 of a second quicker than Bauer's time.

Dylan Bauer has moved on to become a Navy Seal and DeMarco has moved out of state but the lineage of speed on The Continentals continues unabated as Berry looks to feature on the right wing.

"Berry is without a doubt the fastest footballer we have ever had on this club, and we've had some burners, speed is one thing we've never had a shortage of.", said Chairman Ryan Vinton, "(Chester) can play too, he's new to the game but shows a lot of promise and a surprising amount of skill, he has some intagables and reads the game well for someone with his soccer experience, he's a hell of an athlete."

"I've known (Berry) since high school (American) Football, where he was always my(as a quarterback) favorite deep threat, his explosiveness and speed was always unbelievable, it was throw it deep and he'd go get it."

Will Randao Be Eclipsed In Appearances?

(Morristown,NJ)- All time club appearance leader Randao, with 58 to his name seems in jeopardy of having his name removed from the club record list.

Randao, Co-founder of the Morristown 1776 AFC, will be unavailable for Monday nights during the upcoming MCSSA season due to work commitments, meaning he should miss half or more of the club's matches.

A stalwart since the club's inception on the back line Randao has remained relatively injury free throughout his MT76 career.

Midfielder Russell Bauer currently sits at 51 appearances, having only missed the club's inaugural 2007 MCSSA campaign and sees fit to rack up more appearances this MCSSA season.

MCSSA Season and 2010 Kits

(Denville,NJ)- The MCSSA league office announced today that the 2010 season will preliminary start Wednesday June 2nd, a week later than originally expected. The delay is in finalizing a few clubs.

Morristown 1776 Chairman Ryan Vinton said via text ,"I think the extra week is a bit of a relief, May 26 was creeping up really fast, gives Clayton and Bauer an extra week to get the guys match fit."

The league should run mainly Monday and Wednesday nights thru June and July.

2010 Morristown 1776 Kit

The club released a mockup their new 2010 kit by Augusta Sportwear, the only uniform manufactor in club history today.

The more modern look is "badass" says board member Russell Bauer, a member of the uniform committee, it features the familiar white stripe on the shoulder with just a slightly more updated fashion, and a new white stripe down the side.

The kit features Augustas newest Antimicrobial technology, Antimicrobial controls the growth of odor causing microbes (which should come of great relief to players who don't like washing their kit) and the same Wicking fabric seen in the last two MT76 kits, that Wicks moisture away from the body.

Kit Features
100% polyester wicking/antimicrobial smooth knit * Antimicrobial controls the growth of odor causing microbes * Wicks moisture away from the body * Heat sealed label * Self-fabric collar * Contrast color shoulder and side inserts * Set-in sleeves * Double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom * Individually polybagged.

Lack of depth concerns coaching staff

Morristown / Hope Nj,

"This offseason has really seemed to motivate the club" Club chairman Ryan Vinton said in a telephone interview over the weekend. Bauer (Russel) and Clayton (Dan) have been doing a great job recruiting and training the lads."

Dan Clayton could not be reached for comment at time of publication due to his commitments with Sportsfriends SC. However we spoke with Russel Bauer about his biggest concern comming into the season he had this to say:

" Definetly fitness always and a lack of depth in the back. We are always concerned about fitness, we have been training hard with about 8-15 guys abour two to three times a week so im not too concerned, but it's always there. However, Speaking with Coach Dan Clayton, we have not set a rotation for the back just yet because of all the trialists that have made the team, they are all midfield and strikers."

" We tentatively have Clayton Slipping to outside back, with Daire on the other side. With Mugs (Mugunthan Naveendra) and Charlie (Charlie Hyre) at centre backs. We had Mike Austin play outside back last year and did quite well, I see him being a force at outside midfield and in a pinch putting him there. Clayton has just started comming back from a major injury and who knows if he will be able to handle the workload, and people are human and need a breather especally with the hot summer forcasted. We might add one or two more to the roster if a defender comes out or steps up."

Well this analyst believes that Clayton will be a liability on defense, in his limited training time with the team, the hip has seemed to be responsive and his cutting abilities that made him a star during the 2008 season have improved, but how much will determine the success of the back four, depth has always been an issue with the team, and with no friendlies scheduled, we will have to see what happens in about a week.

Continentals Dream of Luthi/Chase Strike Force

It is no secret that the Continentals have been known to suffer goal droughts.  Goals are often a rare commodity in matches, and too often shoddy build-up play or lackluster finishing has plagued an otherwise hard-working and capable team.  Often times the inability to chalk up points on the board leaves the men on the pitch feeling frustrated and deflated, one of the key factors in the porous final 30-minute defense the squad has become notorious for.

During the three years and four competitive seasons of Morristown 1776 AFC, two players have stood out as prolific goal-scorers and playmakers; the kind of players who can take a game on their shoulders and make a difference in one moment of skill and determination.

The tragedy is that these two players, David Chase and Peter Luthi, have never been active at the same time.  Chase was THE impact midfielder of the inaugural season.  Luthi, with the aggression of a raging bull and the unstoppable power of a runaway train, became the club's all-time leading scorer during the second year in the MCSSA and the following fall in the NJSL, while Chase was not part of the roster.  Last summer, Chase returned to the Continental lineup at the same time Luthi suffered a season-ending knee injury.  Chase would go on to be the leading goalscorer of the summer yet the Continentals remained winless.

It's not a naive thought to consider the Continentals could see at least 4 goals per match between the two, were they to play up top together.  The idea continues to titillate and tantalize players, fans, and management alike.

Great news from the 1776 camp this week came out when it was confirmed that Luthi has begun to attend practices and seems to be ready to return to his previous dominant form.  Doubts on Chase still remain, though, as he continues to hold out on talks for the summer.
