1776 Defeats Rival Sheffield Crew 4-1

(Wayne,NJ) The Morristown 1776 AFC defeated rival Sheffield Crew in what can only be described as a chippy affair at Sheffield Park in Wayne, Wednesday night.

The game started slow with both sides playing defensive and trading possession. Sheffield looked to take the lead but Morristown keeper Mark Basso looked world class with two monumental diving saves.

Peter Luthi broke the deadlock with a 32nd minute strike, his fifth of the year, tying The Morristown 1776 AFC single season record held jointly by Rodrigo Correa and David Chase.

The backline of Ryan Kroszer, captain Ryan Deighan, Tyquan Griffin and Brady McDonald held the Crew scoreless for the remainder of the first half as it ended with 1776 leading 1-nil.

The second half saw the match equaled at 1-1 in the 53rd minute as Basso couldn't clear the ball from the 6 yard box following a corner and the Crew capitalized. Basso soon left the game with a groin injury and Carlos Antunes held the Crew scoreless for the duration.

Dan Clayton, playing forward for the first game after spending the first four at center back gave the Continentals back the lead cleaning up a Luthi rebound in the 62nd minute. Only three minutes later youngster Louie Catizone gave the 1776 a two goal advantage with a beautiful header finding twine.

Nick Ferreira found the capping score in the 81st minute with a strike from the top of the box, squeezing under the Crew goalkeeper.

The win improves the Continentals to 2-3-0 on the season for 6 points in the MCSSA. The club next plays a remach with Winter Rovers, Monday night at home.
