Much at Stake for 6/23 Match @ Sheffield Crew

The Morristown 1776 AFC will go to Sheffield Park on Monday 6/23 at 6:30 pm to take on the all to familiar Sheffield Crew. The last time these two clubs met was less than two weeks ago, as the Continentals of Morristown acheived a favorable result in a 4-1 over the Crew. This time around, much, much more is at stake.

Morristown 1776 is currently in 6th place out of 10 with only four matches left. Three out of the four teams beneath them are only one point off from tying Morristown in points. The Continentals must finish strong in the next four games, to not only try to move up the table, but to secure a playoff spot in their competitive division.

Also, Coach Ryan Vinton released a statement last Wednesday night at the Tavern off the Green, proclaiming that he would get the team crest tattooed on his chest if the Continentals made the playoffs. Known for his crazy wagers and his honesty, the lads will look to win out, just to make sure that Vinton gets inked up.

Continentals Gear Up For Wednesday 6/18- Football and...Singing??

The Morristown 1776 AFC will be looking to pick up three more points and climb the table this Wednesday (6:30 pm @ New Providence Highschool) against the off-form Pioneers of New Providence. The lads were dissapointed with their Monday night result, falling 2-1 due to a few late mental errors. Morristown will be out for blood against New Providence, who according to league records have not played well this season.

The Continentals could climb to mid to upper-mid table with a win.

Also, after the game... The lads will look to sharpen their vocal skills off the field as they will take part in Karaoke night at the Tavern off the Green. Come join the lads for a gay old time!

Continentals Lose Mental Battle in Second Half

(Morris Township,NJ) The Continentals entered Monday night's game with some momentum from their 4-1 victory last Wednesday vs. the Sheffield Crew. They were looking to go .500 on the season with a win over the Winter Rovers, a team who they lost to in the first game of the season by a count of 6 to 1.

The Continentals held off numerous attacks from the speedy Rovers in the early stages of the game, and the D-line of Catizone, Clayton, Kroszer and Deighan kept the Rovers offensive attack modest. A break came for 1776 in the 16th minute, when a foul just outside the box set up a free kick for Rodrigo Correa. Correa placed the ball with exquisite touch, and McDonald had to put only the slightest touch on it to find the back of the net. The lads were ecstatic.

The Continentals held the Rovers scoreless the rest of the first half, as they went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The Continentals continued to play solid in the second half, but a few mental errors began to deter the lads from picking up three beautiful points. In the 45th minute, a ball played through the Continental back line was misplayed and took a bad hop around keeper Mark Basso at the top of the box. As he and then defender Dylan Bauer struggled to clear the ball after the unfortunate bounce, a Rover snuck behind them and tapped it in to equalize.

While Morristown played solid, setting up multiple second half opportunities on set pieces, they failed to capitalise and left the door open for the Winter Rovers to steal the points. Frustration loomed, and Continental midfielder Carlos Antunes was issued a yellow card in the 51st minute for having potty mouth while arguing a call.

The Rovers finally got a good set piece opportunity in the 58th minute, as the Continentals failed to clear an in-swinger and a Rover squeeked a ball under the hand of Basso who played the entirety of the game with a groin injury. The lads were devasted as the Rovers took a late 2-1 lead.

The Continentals, with a few late chances, never responded with a goal, as the Rovers held on to the lead and picked up the win in an exciting match. The Morristown 1776 AFC falls to 2-4-0 on the season.

Next match will be 6:30 Wednesday 6/18, at New Providence highschool to take on the winless Pioneers.

1776 Defeats Rival Sheffield Crew 4-1

(Wayne,NJ) The Morristown 1776 AFC defeated rival Sheffield Crew in what can only be described as a chippy affair at Sheffield Park in Wayne, Wednesday night.

The game started slow with both sides playing defensive and trading possession. Sheffield looked to take the lead but Morristown keeper Mark Basso looked world class with two monumental diving saves.

Peter Luthi broke the deadlock with a 32nd minute strike, his fifth of the year, tying The Morristown 1776 AFC single season record held jointly by Rodrigo Correa and David Chase.

The backline of Ryan Kroszer, captain Ryan Deighan, Tyquan Griffin and Brady McDonald held the Crew scoreless for the remainder of the first half as it ended with 1776 leading 1-nil.

The second half saw the match equaled at 1-1 in the 53rd minute as Basso couldn't clear the ball from the 6 yard box following a corner and the Crew capitalized. Basso soon left the game with a groin injury and Carlos Antunes held the Crew scoreless for the duration.

Dan Clayton, playing forward for the first game after spending the first four at center back gave the Continentals back the lead cleaning up a Luthi rebound in the 62nd minute. Only three minutes later youngster Louie Catizone gave the 1776 a two goal advantage with a beautiful header finding twine.

Nick Ferreira found the capping score in the 81st minute with a strike from the top of the box, squeezing under the Crew goalkeeper.

The win improves the Continentals to 2-3-0 on the season for 6 points in the MCSSA. The club next plays a remach with Winter Rovers, Monday night at home.

Luthi Hat-Trick Not Enough as 1776 Falls 7-4

(Parsippany,NJ)- In what was the highest scoring match in Morristown 1776 history, the club fell 7-4 to Lake Parsippany Raiders at Jannarone Park.

The Continentals opened scoring in the second straight match in the 2nd minute, this time it was striker Peter Luthi finding the net to give 1776 a 1-nil advantage. The Raiders proceded to score 3 straight giving them the 3-1 lead, Luthi again scored to bring the Continentals within 1 but a 40th minute questionable penalty on a hand ball, on a play Danny Barbosa appeared to have his hand tucked aganist his stomach in the box gave Lake Parsippany the 4-2 halftime lead.

The Raiders scored two early in the second half to take a 6-2 lead but the 1776 answered with back to back goals in the 80th and 82nd minute to bring it within two and give the Continentals a second life but a 85th minute clincher by Lake Parsippany ended any chance of a rally.

The Morristown 1776 are next in action Monday at Parsippany Blues 25, Smith Field in Parsippany at 8pm.

1776 Defeats Derby Rival Hanover Lions 2-1

(Whippany, NJ)- The Morristown 1776 AFC defeated Hanover Lions 2-1 Wednesday night at Stoney Brook Park in Whippany.

The Continentals struck early with a 2nd minute goal by winger Brady McDonald, much setting the tone for the rest of the match.

The Lions equaled the score in the 21st minute by former 1776 trialist Tavish-Zauser Mannes, but Peter Luthi countered for 1776 no less than a minue later as he convered on his first of many chances.

The rest of the first saw the Continentals control possession but fail to convert on any chances and the two sides entered the break with 1776 leading 2-1.

The two former Morristown 1776 players, brothers Scott and Brian DeMarco and former 1776 trialist Tavish Zauser-Mannes much added to the intenisty of this match up as both sides fought hard in the second half.

At around the 70 minute mark, assistant manager Ryan Vinton, filling in for manager Claudio Cristao, moved to a more defensive lineup trying to hold off the Lions. With the wings of the Continentals normal 4-1-2-2-1 playing deeper more towards the midfield, Morristown held off constant attacks for Hanover and held on for the 2-1 victory.

The Continentals next play Lake Parsippany Raiders, Friday June 6th 9pm at Jannarone Field in Parsippany.
