Continetials Season Preview

Morristown NJ,

Tonight the Morristown kick off in prime tonight away tonight at 8 Vs. Pompton lakes, a team the continetials had a tough time last season. With coaching and field issues, the squad loos to rebound from a painful 1-10 season. Back are almost the same exact squad with veterans like Vinton, Bauer, Clayton, and Daire. Dan Starr looks to improve from his rookie season. With more time playing, this Veteran squad looks to move up the table, and with a 13 team table, playoff chances look slim. Only time will tell.

"George" Can't Help Continentals Claim Carmichael Cup

5/10/09- As The Morristown 1776 AFC prepared to take the pitch Sunday against table leaders TrinJersey SA, they realized that they only had 9 lads. Heroically, Brady McDonald and Russell Bauer desperately searched for random people to play for the squad. Finally, right before the opening whistle blew, came "George", who looked like Ving Rhames. He courageously offered the Continentals his services in the Stokely Carmichael Cup.
Within a minute of kickoff, and George playing in Tommy Hilfiger jean shorts and a "Camp Staff" marroon t-shirt, Morristown fell one-to-nill after a TrinJersey cross and header. TrinJersey dominated much of the first half, with many shots on goal, despite some nice runs by Continentals McDonald, Daire, Clayton, Linepinuel and Bauer. The Continentals would fall three nill before half, but not until they had their greatest opportunity chip off the post. Former Continental Luis Guaman made his return with the lads, and after challenging the TrinJersey keeper on a through-ball, Guaman managed to knock the ball away from the keeper, but the shot hit the upper right post and flew out of bounds.

The second half showed much of the same, as TrinJersey seemed far too tall and far too fast for the lads. Morristown fell Seven to Nill by minute 75. The large crowd began to come together and push for the Continentals who were playing with much heart, and in the eighty first minute, the lads got their big break. Brady McDonald was sent on a long ball, which he put a beautiful touch on and then crossed it even more beautifully across the net. Awaiting the cross was Russell Bauer, who had timed his run perfectly and put a stellar finish to the magnificant play. The crowd, or as they prefered to be called the "Continental Army" went crazy, in a scene that was reminiscent of the movie Rudy. George was allegedly spotted wiping a tear off of his cheek after the touching moment.

Three minutes later, after the TrinJersey keeper was caught playing too high during a Maroon possession, recieved a long Rob Linepinuel chip over his head that looked as if it were destined for the glory hole. However, the shot chipped off of the near post, and the fans were hit with deep sorrow and pain.

The lads and George finished with heart, but at the end of the match, TrinJersey SA lifted the Stokely Carmichael cup with glory and pride after a 7-1 victory.

Game Notes:
-Charlie Hyre and Luis Guaman made their returns, and both were key performers
-Marco and Clayton both served in the net for Morristown
-TrinJersey SA had no idea that they were playing for the Stokely Carmichael Cup
-Many players, after the game, went home to celebrated Mothers Day with their moms
-Randao urinated on his shorts before the match after a poison ivy leaf scare
-Players on TrinJersey SA spoke with Carribean accents

Match Preview: Clayton gametime decision with injury.

(Hope, NJ)
-Continental’s captain Dan Clayton will be a game time decision this evening with is what is described as a severe strain on the left groin muscle. He has been battling this injury since his two goal outburst several weeks ago. When asked for comment he said in a statement via e-mail that he did not think the injury was as severe as what it is now. He missed training last night to “rest his body and soul”

He also said in conflicting reports that the injury he sustained was not from playing with the County college of Morris soccer team but however, “a lack of fitness “.

We asked current manager Ryan Vinton’s thoughts on the situation:

“Were going to let him warm up tonight and see how he feels” he said “I’m going to get an honest answer out of him. I know he loves to play, but I don’t care if I have to tazer him, if he is still experiencing pain, he’s going to sit. The kid gives me a lot, but with us out of the playoffs there’s no reason to be injured and useless for meaningful games in the spring.”

In his absence from playing, Clayton has been sharpening his tactical awareness by taking control of some formation shifts and substitutions. In last week’s defeat, it seemed like the continentals were playing with a fire not seen since the summer, some supporters have stated. Clayton also stated that “he is in no way trying to take Vinton’s job” as rumors from the board stated Vinton would be fired soon. Clayton also told us “When my playing career is over, I wish to coach and give back everything I have learned to the lads. If we expand to a junior division or a women’s division, I’d give a shot at coaching .”

If Clayton cannot go tonight, Russ Bauer will take captainship and lead an inspired squad with Mike “boo boo” Cheatam and Randao` both coming off subpar games with injuries and illness respectively. Ryan Vinton coming off a good comeback game will look to anchor the defense with Mike Pollock and Dylan Bauer. With an unlucky ringing of the bell, the midfield attack of Brady Macdonald, Mo, and depending on who has the hot hand, Marco or Mark Basso in the midfield and Goal.
Improvement is expected tonight.

Exclusive Look Into Dan Clayton: Continental Captain

We got the opportunity to sit down with the continental’s newest captain Dan Clayton. This is what he had to say….

Q: So let’s start from the beginning, where are you from?

A: Actually that’s a funny one; I live in a small town called Hope. It’s about ten or so miles from the Pennsylvania border.

Q: Wow, that’s pretty far way, how did you find out about the club?

A: (chuckles) Well actually, I was about to stop playing soccer all together, until my good friend Aaron told me about the Continentals. I figured this is my last shot at playing so what the hell.

Q: (laughs) so I’m guessing it turned out all right then?

A: well so far so good, I can honestly say if it wasn’t for Ryan (Ryan Vinton, Interim club manager and chairman) I would be just working and watching soccer on T.V. He gave me confidence and the desire to play again.

Q: You say desire, we had a previous conversation with former captain and President Ryan Deighan ,A.K.A Randâo said you had the most heart on the team and this led to your appointment as the new captain, do you care to comment on this?

A: Yeah, I guess you can say I always had heart. I gained my work ethic from my father. He never played soccer once in his life but I remember specifically the summer going into 8th grade he made me run every damn day. I hated him from it (smiles) but when I wanted to give up or I was too tired to keep running, he was right behind me to keep moving and said I would be fine. He always got in my face and told me I sucked if I had a lousy game. He really made me better and made me truly enjoy the game of soccer.

A: (Continued) as for my appointment as captain. I was nothing but happily shocked. As a first year player I did nothing but work and do all I can for the team to help it win, even if I had to play center back, a position that I was not very familiar with. Unfortunately our performance did not show how well we worked. I knew not everyone played to their potential and I tried to lead best by example.

Q: So I heard you played through many injuries, could that have contributed to the team’s misfortunes?

A: A true warrior never makes excuses and a captain doesn’t make excuses. I wish I could say I was 100% for every game but I wasn’t. Everyone who plays throughout the season gets their fair share of knocks, I just glad it was not anything too serious like Ryan’s injury (Ryan Vinton: Torn Knee ligaments, out until spring 09)

Q: However; rumors are swirling that there is a rift between you and manager Ryan Vinton; some sources say you even have defected to another club. Is here any truth to this at all?

A; (emphatically) No! And it’s BS otherwise. Yes it’s true that I am currently playing with another team, the County College of Morris Soccer team. I got permission and the blessing from Ryan (Vinton) to pursue and play for the team. It gains me valuable experience that I can pass on to my teammates and ultimately help the Continentals move up in the tables.

Q: Well can you make some predictions for this 08-09 season?

A: I'll make a bold one. We WILL be one of the top 2 teams in our division; I like what our manager did in bringing in some new guys, and keeping the core unit together. I currently still am fighting some injuries from the summer and from my college team. But I can honestly say with the core guys we have we will put up one hell of a fight, and we either go big and meet every challenge and exceed out expectations or we go home. We have too talented a group of guys to do anything less, and I expect big things……

-Thank you for your time.
